Funded PhD: Prof Donal O'Shea - Apjohn PhD Scholarships in Chemistry


The Apjohn Scholarships are new prestigious awards aiming to develop future chemistry leaders in academia and industry. The will particularly suit ambitious doctoral candidates interested in pursuing research in medicinal chemistry or chemical biology while gaining valuable training and experience in the delivery of undergraduate teaching.

Project description:


Research projects can be conducted with any of the academic staff within the department with specific group research areas described www.rcsi.ie/pharmaceutical_staff. Applicants are encouraged to contact academic staff members prior to submitting an application.
The research will be carried out in the new state-of-the-art chemistry research facility in RCSI St Stephen’s Green. Scholarships, which are awarded in honour of Prof. James Apjohn the first RCSI Professor of Chemistry appointed in 1828, will consist of a €18,000 annual stipend, PhD student fees, and research consumables and conference budget.

Specification:


  • candidates should have or be about to gain either a first class B.Sc or M.Sc degree or equivalent.
  • candidates may need www.rcsi.ie/EnglishReq.
  • candidates must register for the degree of PhD for which a scholarship is provided.
Specifically, the duties of the post will include:


  • commitment to your programme of research in order to gain the degree of PhD.
  • teaching undergraduate laboratory and tutorials as required under the direction of the Head of Department or nominee.
  • undergoing programmes of training and development as required.
  • complying with statutory legislation and Department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety.
  • representing the best interests of the Department/RCSI at all times.
  • performing such other duties as may be required.
